Description
The San Mateo County Parks Department is recruiting for a Seasonal Park Aide to work within the South Coast District III which includes the following parks: Memorial, Sam McDonald, and Pescadero Creek.
This Park Aide’s primary duties:
- Janitorial needs of the parks including cleaning and servicing restrooms and maintaining general cleanliness of the campgrounds and use areas.
- Assisting with trail maintenance including drainage work and removing down trees.
- Assist in basic plumbing, carpentry, and other park projects.
The position requires working weekends, holidays, and some flexibility with hours to be onsite during day or evening shifts as well as working in extreme weather conditions. Candidate must be able to spend long periods of time outdoors in rugged terrain.
This position could require driving to different park locations and handling power-driven tools and machinery. Candidates selected for this position must have a valid California driver license or equivalent and must be at least 18 years of age at the date of hire due to Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) restrictions.
The pay range is $19.85 – $24.85 per hour. Extra-help positions offer temporary employment for up to 1,040 hours which is equivalent to about six months full-time, however, employment might end sooner depending on the needs of the hiring department. Extra-help positions are paid on an hourly rate basis and provide some benefits. Extra-help workers are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the extra-help assignment.
Qualifications
Knowledge of: Policies, procedures and safety regulations related to the park location to which assigned; safety hazards and equipment related to park environments; driving and operating automobiles, light trucks, safety equipment and other motorized equipment safely; communicating effectively orally and in writing; landscaping and ground maintenance practices including pruning, lawn and plant care.
Skill/Ability to: Maintain cleanliness of park facilities; use hand, electric and pneumatic power tools; perform light construction, repair and maintenance of facilities and equipment; perform clerical tasks including keeping accurate records, making simple arithmetic calculations, handling cash, and filing; follow oral and written instructions including safety rules, procedures and practices; work courteously and effectively with the public, co-workers, and volunteers; operate motor vehicles and other equipment; stand, walk, and bend for extended periods of time; lift items weighing up to 60 pounds.

Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification.Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination.All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California, and applicants must participate at their own expense.
